Springtime S.I.P.

In this weeks "She Shares" series I'm happy to welcome Datso Perkins of the Box Bar. Here is a delicious spring cocktail form her to enjoy while hanging out at home. Scroll down to learn more about Datso and her sweet little mobile bar!

Serving size - Two cocktails

  1. Bring one cup of water and one cup of sugar to a boil. Turn the heat down and stir until the sugar is dissolved. Turn the heat off and add two to three lilac blossoms. Let cool and refrigerate, if not using immediately.
  2. Put two glasses in the freezer.
  3. Juice four grapefruits for fresh juice or use pre-squeezed grapefruit juice.
  4. Put ice in a cocktail shaker.
  5. Add 4 oz. vodka, 1 oz. Douglas Fir hydrosol, 4 oz. grapefruit juice and 1 1/2 oz. lilac simple syrup to the cocktail shaker. Put lid on and shake well. Strain into two cold glasses and garnish with fresh grapefruit.

Cheers!

Hello! I am so excited to introduce myself to all of you! My name is Datso Perkins and I am the owner and co-creator of the Box Bar. I was born and raised in a small rural coastal community known as Whale Gulch in the tippy top of Northern Mendocino. I live in Southern Humboldt with my husband, and the other half of my design team, Lynn, and our two daughters, Sophia (just shy of 17) my unofficial social media content and photo editor, and Molly (12) my energetic bird lover and budding photographer, and our dogs, cats, chickens, ducks, and pigeons. Yes, you read that right, pigeons. What can I say? They were all Molly wanted for Christmas so now we are pigeon farmers.

I run my businesses out of my home office alongside the Mattole River and slip away to my garden as often as possible where I grow peonies for my events and many other flowers, vegetables, and bar herbs for the Box Bar. When Tree Myriah asked me to write a post for her blog, how could I say no? So here goes my first blog post!

I have been planning weddings and events for many years at my first business D. Perkins Events. I had some free standing bars that we had built and I would subcontract bartenders. Fast forward a few years and enter the start of the trend of vintage mobile bars. I had been secretly searching for a vintage box truck to renovate. One day I told my husband my idea, and instead of the "not another project” response I was expecting, he said, “Our neighbors have one, lets see if they want to sell it.” So began the Box Bar.

We gutted it and rebuilt it using local hardwoods and materials, as much as possible. Staying local, organic, and low to no waste is important to me. The Box Bar is streamlined bartending. It contains all of the elements and conveniences of a brick and mortar bar, but on wheels. Electricity, water, grey water storage, triple basin sink, hand washing sink, lights, and much more. Set up is super quick and easy and we have many lounge options to match your style and decor. Box Bar bartending adds fun and flavor to your event! Our mixologists help you create the perfect menu for your event using the freshest seasonal local ingredients and liquors as much as possible. Not all events have the room for the Box Bar, or for when the weather doesn’t behave, we have several custom and stylish free standing bars we use. We are looking forward to the day when we can once again bring the party to you!
