Pushkins Bakery has been one of my favorite spots to eat in Sacramento for a few months now. They specialize in gluten and dairy-free baking with a focus on fresh to go sandwiches. The bakery is conveniently located on the same block as the Sacramento Natural Foods Co-op, so I often end up ordering my lunch and then walking to grab groceries while my food is being made.
In late December 2016, owners Danny and Olga Turner opened the doors to a brand new restaurant in Midtown and yes it too is entirely gluten-free with many dairy-free options. Now, I know what you might be thinking, “meh I’ve tried gluten-free bread and it’s too tough and dry.” But I swear to you by the length of the mighty Caribbean Sea that this is no ordinary gluten-free baking! It’s delicious!
There are also many more options on the menu besides just baked goods. Like Eggs Benedict, Pushkin Parfait, or a Cobb Salad. I tried the Quinoa Bowl with cured salmon, poached egg, cucumber, carrots, avocado, sprouts, mixed greens and a lemon vinaigrette and it was divine.
When I am in the mood for a sandwich at the restaurant or the original bakery, I go with my personal favorite, the Green Turkey; with turkey, mayo, green tangy dressing, salt & pepper, sprouts, cucumber, avocado, arugula and butter lettuce. Sometimes if I’m feeling extra hungry I’ll add bacon!
I can’t ever seem to grab a sandwich without swooning over the treats. I almost always pick up a little something to go. I’m very partial to the “Awesomes” which are mini lemon poppy seed pound cakes. Oh my goodness I loose it over these delicious bites. Basically everything here is good, you can’t go wrong.
